I'm forced to agree w @The_Traveler about the second one ... Without seeing the original images, I might suggest working with the color sliders to see if you can selectively lighten and darken color ranges in the original images.
But in the first I disagree with Lew that the sky is un-dramatic. I'm willing to bet there's some lines and patterns that can be brought out. For me, I find myself pleased when I slightly darken the blue channel with shots like these. And the detail and texture in the rocks is very nice. Maybe working with a contrast slider a little bit can bring out more of the carpety look those California hills are known for.
