i say give it ur best ...its a learning experience...u'll learn and be better prepared for the next one..plus ur not getting paid for it ..

The kit lens will leave you at a disadvantage here unless they have decent lighting. Something with a constant aperture of at least 2.8 would be better. About the most you could push the camera to is 1600 and still get a usable image. Try using manual at about 1/10 iso 1600. If you have a tripod bring it. You might be able to get some action blur kind of shots which might be interesting. Good luck!

You might look into getting some older minolta lenses. Most are less then $100 for decent prime action.

Leave your camera at home, because you will be very disheartened when you see the results, even an experienced photographer will struggle with your equipment, the only thing i can see possible is some artistic second curtain sinc blur shots but i don't think that is possible with your pop up flash

ikr. It seems to me that a lot of photogs on here seem to have forgotten what it is like to start out with a pos camera and just have a little love for taking some pics. Yeah maybe she wont get a whole slew of perfect pictures but she could probably get a few decent shots which is probably all she might need.

I took this pic with the same camera but I did have a Minolta 50mm f1.7. $100 lens.

If you are OK with it, I suggest that when you get back, post some shots and LET some of us post process some, if they need it. we can help!

Thanks guy for your kind words, Yes, I did struggle with my equipment, BUT I had fun, and yes I have learnt that I need to upgrade, but being a student doesn't leave you a lot of cash to splash out on a lens, even if it is a second hand one
I have been looking to upgrade my lens for about a year now, but like I said money is tight atm

I see all these opportunitys as a test to me, I'm still learning..I'm no pro..far from it..but even the pros can still learn a thing or two

I'm happy that I can get criticism on here, so I know what to do, what works for me, to also Learn from any mistakes that I make along the path.
I'll be uploading some pics soon, but ill be the first to admit that they arnt so good, but at least I enjoyed myself, and I got experience from doing a dance show, what equipment that I need and also what settings are best....ill be prepared in the future

Even if you take your camera and nothing turns out the way you thought it would, at least you had the experience and photos to learn from. The photos will have the EXIF data on them. Use it and review.

Instead of just going out and buying that 50mm 1.4, deal with what you have, learn from it. This will give you a better understanding of WHY you need it...

I used to sell motorcycles. Some guys would come in, buy a brand new bike. With out even riding it for a week or two they would immediately buy all kinds of performance parts to make it faster or handle batter. Now how do they even know what everything did or how much an improvement all that stuff was? Unless they're a pro racer, they don't. They just read about it or someone told them to do it with out really understanding why they need it.

Photography is the same way. You need to know what you are trying to accomplish in order to buy the right gear. Until you experiment a little bit and exceed the gear's limitations, you won't know what that is.

I will be experimenting more with different aspects of photography to see what I like to do, and to see what I might need

I have to do portrait work now, (for my A level photography exam) I'm trying to capture people's personality through a series of photos that ill put together

Looking forward to seeing your shots! I found myself in a similar situation recently...photographed a few college events with low end gear, and the image quality came out leaving much to be desired. Glad to know I'm not in it alone! =)

It's best to know the limitations of your gear and work with it, shooting stuff your gear is not capable of will just keep knocking you back and will make her think it her fault that she is getting bad images
