Hopes for the next generation DSLRs?

SHOULD IT COME 16months+ in the future
Same treatment D700 got from D3, but from the D4 sensor.

If the D700 replacement comes out in either one of these configurations, it will easily be the greatest, and most highly demanded DSLR ever produced by any manufacturer. It will be on backorder for practically its entire lifecycle.

What do you expect, or what would you like to see?

True. The D3s was such a huge improvement over the D3, they could afford to do this. With the D4 being only marginally better than the D3s, it'd be ridiculously hard to market this camera and not cannibalize the D4 sales. I agree with that. But there's really no other viable option. When the camera technology reaches a plateau, what route do their underlings have but to join it? I'm sure I'll be flamed for saying it's reached a plateau, but the improvements really are only marginal, as far as I can see.

I'd love to hear some other guesses for a D700 replacement.

In cameras I need:
- higher dynamic range
- better and wider focus grid
- better performance in low light
- higher frame rate (at least 8fps) for the lowest cost FX cameras
- customizable hand grip (not the grip attached at the bottom of the camera); I experimented a little bit myself, and made correctly, a material capable of plastic deformation can be used to basically create a mold of your hand so it will fit comfortably and very tight
- internal radio triggers for flashes
- quieter shutter release
- built-in GPS
- wi-fi streaming in real time to an external device (computer+monitor etc.) of both viewfinder image and live view - I know it would probably mean electronic viewfinder which I hate, but maybe there are other ideas....


In lenses:
- although probably optically impossible, I would definitely like f/1 and even faster, affordable lenses, of at least 400mm focal length (I know, sounds crazy but this is what I want... ); also probably impossible but I would like to have some DOF to such a lens....
- faster focus for the lenses that are considered today fast in focusing
- a feature like the one on Nikon 105mm f/2.8 which is limiting the focus range so that I can chose to only try to focus between certain distances - it would be extremely helpful to make focusing faster for sports and fast moving wild life like birds etc.

For everything, lower prices!

In cameras I need:

- better performance in low light Agreed. Although, they are incredible now on the higher end.
- higher frame rate (at least 8fps) for the lowest cost FX cameras I think frame rates are going into the same mindset of the megapixel racers. Everyone needs more, but seldomly actually needs to use them. But, to each his own.

- quieter shutter release I think shutter releases are perfectly quiet. That damned mirror flap is the loud part that should be quieted. But, that said, I agree with this too.
- built-in GPS Agreed.

Jeeeesh. I can't imagine the DOF on something like that. I would say, though, that I can't see how this would be entirely useful. Have you seen shots done with the 50mm F/0.95 or F/0.7? They're practically the same as putting the completely useless "soft diffusion" filter on the lens. I can't imagine how something of the sort would be useful for a 400mm+ lens. But, that's just me. You may have a use for it that I can't think of.

Especially at longer lengths for birding and sports. It's a bit hard to judge distances as they get far away.

The idea about f/1.0 and very long focal length is to have enough light to shoot some of the things, wild-life, that are not really keen on light and flashes may be impossible or very hard to use. I know there are trap cameras and such but I like to "hunt" my subject with my camera+lens in my hand!
I do agree that DOF would be practically nonexistent but then again I could use such a lens at f/1.8-f/2 when I suppose it would be very sharp, at least sharper than an f/2.8 lens at f/2.8...

The customizable grip should obviously be changeable, but this is not that difficult. I got the idea a few years ago when I saw a computer mouse covered on something like a foam into which the user pressed his hand with a glove to make molding - he was a fanatic gamer....

To me, no. A 400mm/1.0 would probably lack sharpness. If you add the TC, I think what you'll get will be very soft.

What I'd like to see from Camera bodies:

Autofocus grid covering the entire viewfinder so you can set a focus point literally anywhere.
Bigger viewfinder (I hate how viewfinders are so small and you have to get your eye in it to be able to see anything at all.)
Higher fps (around 8-10 fps)
Better iso performance (I really want 200k ISO to look like iso 100)
Better Dynamic Range
Option for articulated screens on pro DSLRs
Built-in battery pack+gps+wireless flash controller+wireless and wired network - grip <--- bult in wireless flash triggering is a must, if a saw a camera that had that built in without external transmitter I'd get one right away
OLED screen - LCDs are silly, Oled is where the color quality is at, plus they consume less power and are thinner.
Smart autofocus (the one that works) can switch from still photo to servo and still keep 100% sharp focus (current canon AI focus is a joke)
Full USB3 speed (over 500mb/s) to get photos and videos off camera quickly (YES CANON I am looking at you, no usb3 in latest DSLRs ? Wow.)

The things I really would want though would be that uber grip. Built-in grip that includes gps,batteries,wireless and wired lan, and wireless flash triggers. That would own.

Better Contrast
at least f/2 for zooms like 24-70 and 70-200
make zooms smaller and lighter

Could be a lot more but for lenses 2 things I'd really want would be IS on 24-70 (mark III will prolly have this) and making useful zooms with f/2 or f/1.8 instead of f/2.8 (although I doubt this will happen because of improvements in high ISO)

Nikon AF-S 24-70mm f/2.8G ED doesn't have VR either. Otherwise I would switch.

Wtf is this, the most used and useful lens in the world doesn't have VR or IS. They must be thinking that 70mm is wide enough you don't need IS. Pfft..

I wish they could auto off VR when shutter speeds go faster than 1/125. That's when VR starts to degrade image quality.
