Yes i realised i could have cropped #2 a bit but I had to be quick to catch him with his tongue out.... i'm not into photo editing.
I really love the character in the first one; its not a very appealing shotbut its beautiful in its own way!
One of the problems here, is the first picture is cute if you know horses. You've seen that face, that action and you can appreciate the humor. For those that don't know horses and are looking from strictly an aesthetic view point, not so much. From their perspective, it's awkward and far from the graceful or majestic image of the horse. No romance, in other words. In this respect it's sort of like a picture of your kid with a dirty face, to you it's endearing, to someone else it's simply dirty. I've had horses for years, I see why you find this cute, but you need to realize not everyone will feel the same. That's been one of the hardest things for me to realize, a picture can hold a personal draw to you, but that has nothing to do with the technical merit of the shot. Don't worry overly much about it, have fun with your camera, everyone gets better with practice.

Excellent explanation! I do find the shot cute. But only a horse lover will give it more than a glance.

Why?
It shows the horse in a way you don't usually come to see it.
It shows you something you wouldn't be able to see without the camera/ photo.
That's its appeal to the viewer, IMO.
