Hotshoe flash: Promaster FL-120

I went to a camera shop today and I asked for a lower end hot-shoe flash just to start out, and I was shown a Promaster FL-120.

The guy also tried to sell me a Tamron lens instead of a Nikkor that I originally asked for and I found out those suck in the long run, unlike Nikkor lenses, and it's more in the shop's financial interest to sell the Tamron since they get a bonus for selling it. Since they've put their profits before actually helping me get a lens I want (I know they have to make money, but still), I'm really not sure about this flash.

Should I hold out for a more expensive flash like a Nikon SB-700 instead, or is it okay to get this cheaper one just to have for now?

Any flash is better than no flash... but a known, reliable 3rd party flash will be far better than some cheap no name POS! Like Vivitar 283 / 285, or Yongnuo 460 / 560.

and yes.. OEM flashes are going to be even better... but much more pricey. That is your call! But if you buy third party... do it right, and don't buy junk!

I knew this was no good. I looked up the flash when I saw it had no reviews on Amazon and was not carried by B&H nor Adorama, a red flag shot up.
