House Fly

I was pleased to find a house fly (I think?) in our window sill this morning so I could finally try my new bellows on an insect!

This image is a focus stack of 24 images at f/16 using a reversed Canon 35mm f/2.0 with 140mm of extension for ~7x magnification. The fly's head is about 1mm wide from this angle.

I'm not entirely thrilled with my focus stack, but I thought I'd post my first effort. I'm hoping to have time tomorrow to try for a better stack. Much to learn about using this much magnification!

I think rotating this 90 degrees clockwise would be beneficial.

I went back to the fly today and, after several tries, I have something that I'm not totally embarrassed to show in public. I have much to learn!

This image is made of 40 frames (at f/16) that were focus stacked in CS5. From this angle, the head of the fly is about 2mm wide.

I just wonder how long it takes you to process such a shot, I never tried this but tried macro without high magnification or focus stacking.

This particular photo took me about 10-12 minutes to shoot the 40 frames. Then it took about 20-25 minutes to process through in CS5 on my laptop. I imagine I would have saved some time if I had done it on my (more powerful) desktop. The biggest time drags are copying all of the files into one image for stacking, and then letting photoshop focus stack them.
