How long is too long?

What is the maximum time you'll use for long exposure shots? Should I worry about sensor overheat? I want to try some star shots but I also don't want to damage my sensor. Thanks for the input.

Taking a normal exposure will not damage your sensor regardless of how long you take it.... If you use a telephoto lens, on the equator, with a telephoto lens, pointed at the sun, at noon, on a clear day, and expose it for an hour.... well, that's a different story.

I hear people take many 5 min shots and combine them. I have also heard one long exposure but thats film for the most part.
