How many megapixels do you need?

Anything over 5 MP should be sufficient for a hobbyist photographer.

which includes 36mp .. considering 36 is over 5mp

but we "real" hobbyists are waiting for 48mp just because we're looking for something really sufficient.

Ah crap. Wish I would have known about the 645D last week when I actually had an extra 10 grand burning a hole in my pocket. As it is though I had no idea that Pentax was actually marketing a camera like that specifically for me, so I went out and blew all that money on hats.

Perhaps I should have said for most hobbyist photographers, and the question was need, not want.

But - As print size increases so does the viewing distance, and as the viewing distance increases the need for print resolution decreases.
To keep the math tidy - 6 MP in the 3:2 aspect ratio of most DSLR image sensors is 3000 x 2000 px. (5 MP would be just slightly smaller at about 2775 x 1850 px)

Many consumer print labs stake their print quality reputation on having a required minimum print resolution of about 100 ppi.

At 100 ppi a 3000 px by 2000 px image will be a 30 x 20 inch print, which is a large or wall size print.
At 150 ppi a 3000 px by 2000 px image will be a 20 x 13 inch print, which is also a large, or wall size print.
At 200 ppi a 3000 px by 2000 px image will be a 15 x 10 inch print, which is also a large, or wall size print.

Ok, so the OP posts a question about higher MP vrs lower MP and specifically asks about Nikon camera's because that is what he currently owns, and yet somehow we are now comparing Canon to Nikon and posting charts and graphs. Still trying to figure out how that happened.. lol

Well jeez, what else could we do when we are not out shooting?

Oh don't get me wrong I love a good cat fight as much as the next guy, just wish they'd stop with all the charts and graphs and mathy stuff. Lol

I don't know about that, I have a 20x30 print in my downstairs bathroom. If you look to your right while taking a leak you can count the grains of pollen on the flowers.

My phone has 8MP and its ****e, My D7000 has 16 or 17? (lol I should know that) and its great I would probably like D800 size images but then I thought the other day its a crap load more room on your HDD for a 36Mp raw image what about 70 or 80MB?!

Ive blown up an image I done the other day to 36" x 48" and it was fantastic
