I saw this cover and am keen in creating this look of shadow on both side of the face. Is it done by makeup or lighting effects?

Saw this cover of a magazine and was really interested to know how to create the look.

It's done by the lighting setup. I've moved your thread from the Alternative Photographic Techniques forum, as you'll get better suggestions on studio lighting over here.

Thanks!

That one is really simple.
I'd also lay money there is some serious burning down done there on the face. If you look at the sides of her body there is NOT a shadow to match it either on her left/our right side or armpit.
I was expecting you to want something much more dramatic, in which case you'd use a snoot or barn doors to highly concentrate that light and keep it from feathering off the sides of the face.

Thanks, I will try your advice given to shoot from low.

In this case it looks to be more makeup than light, or even post processing work.

When trying to decode lighting, look at where the shadows are. The shodows indicate where the light(s) are and if they are modified, how they might be modified.

See the dark shadows her shoulders, arm, and bodice of her dress, cast on her and the background? They indicate a light low and slightly to the left under the lens.
The shadow edges here indicate little light modification was used, perhaps a beauty dish.

You can also look at the reflections of the light (catchlights) in her eyes.
