How to create 3D quicktime image

Has anyone here any experience in creating a 3D quicktime image (a QTVR image I think it's called) such as this: www.apple.com/hardware/gallery/ipod/

If so, could anyone give me any pointers as to what's involved? Do you require some kind of calibrated turntable, for example? How do you build the sequence of images into a useable VR file?
