How to use a tripod

I can't say anything because I've done something similar.

I was in Albuquerque, NM watching the International Balloon Festival at dawn. I got my tripod out and my quick-release plate was not there. In fact it's never been seen again and I had to order a new one when I got home. I was on a motorcycle and it was probably somewhere along the road between Nashville and Albuquerque. Regardless, I shot the balloons lifting off by just resting my camera on top of the tripod.

yeah. but if you look carefully here, the lens is facing the rail's plate.

My wife was watching something, and they pulled out a tripod, he grabbed his "hog wild" toy camera he got from a wendy's happy meal and set up my tripod and pressed the lens against the plate and started snapping "chachu! chachu!"

Oh, yeah I did do a little better than that!

At least he understands that a tripod has something to do with photography. That's a great start for someone his age.
