How to view RAW

I apologize if this is on the wrong forum, I did a search and I couldn't find the topic anywhere so this is why I am posting.

I had my camera in RAW mode by accident after taking some photos this morning. I did a google search and it seems it's a format for photoshop? Oops. I am not a photoshop person although I do have GIMP-but I haven't really spent time learning it, guess it's not too much my thing (I may look into it some day). Anyway, I thought I would ask the experts here on how I can view these pictures I just took, and more importantly how I can turn them into a normal sized picture say if I wanted to print 4x6 or 5x7 or post on flickr or online somewhere?

I appreciate the help. I was wondering why the camera was taking longer time to process, then I saw it on the display.. LOL I may not be doing that again!

All RAW formats are proprietary to the manufacturer. Canon's RAW format is different from Nikon's RAW format which is different from Sony's RAW format, etc., however it is NOT a Photoshop format. Photoshop, among most of the better editors, will convert RAW format. There are several utilities available for free (i.e. RAW Therapee) that will convert to other formats. There should have also been some software that came with your camera that will do so.

Thank You.. I bought my camera used so I have no software for it. It's the Canon 300D. I will do a google search and see if I can find something there.

You can probably download it from Canon's web site. All of Nikon's software is available for download on their web site and I suspect the same is true of Canon.

Canon U.S.A. : Support & Drivers : Digital Rebel XTi

They don't go back all the way to the 300D, but this is the page for the 350D - you can download the software there. Just select you OS and all that stuff...
I'm pretty sure all EOS cameras ship with the same software anyway.

Digital Photo Professional is the name of the program you'll be looking for. Once you enter you computers OS and version, it will be near the top of the list that comes up.

If you have Windows, try Microsoft codecs. Google Picasa is another option.

Keep shooting in RAW. Learn to edit and you will see a big improvement in your photos beyond what shooting in jpeg will offer.

Also, check out light room. I do 98% of my editing in it. I use PS for output sharpening and touch ups that l light room can't do.

Thank You everyone for your help!!

I did find some oddball editor that just had auto stuff that I was using. Just in that program alone off of my first pic I about fell on the floor!! WOW! :smileys:

I think NOLA.ron you might have got me wanting to do just that!!!

I am going to download the Canon software now and uninstall the other. Thank You again!! I have learned so much in just a few days being on this site!
