we were at a park that had alot of feeders so I measured off the min focus distance (so I could fill the frame) and just watched and waited. They actually land quite often but don't stay landed long so you have to go fast. The 500/4 even with the 1.7 TC focuses very fast on the D4....

I don't usually shoot BIFs from a tripod or at 850mm but that setup does well when I do
the 1.7 on the 500 is cutting off alot of light making the D4's job harder so I'd prefer the 1.4 or no TC
