I am doing something wrong

On this shot the white from what looks like a house on the right hand side is distracting, I would have cropped that out in post. Other then that I like the shot...

Thanks for the input from everyone. Will try the advice given and spend some more time with the camera. Playing around earlier netted me some decently sharp pictures, so looks like I am on my way.
 
From what I've read, the 28-75 has some issues with backfocusing when on autofocus. Meaning when you focus, it looks like you're focusing on her face but when you take a picture, it's really focusing about 10 notches behind your target. This can be calibrated in Nikon cameras but I'm not sure how to do it with Canon ones. Maybe the XTI had something that adjusted this issue or maybe you never noticed since the XTI had a smaller resolution.

For sake of experimenting, go take a picture of something on manual focus.
