I completly messed this up....What am I doing wrong ?

What mode should I try shooting in ?

You can try shooting in manual, but you need to have a little knowledge to do it. The camera then does NOTHING to decide how bright or dark the image is. YOU have to do it all. You have to read those tutorials and understand what ISO, Aperture and Shutter speed do. Then you have to control them to make the image come out properly lit. If you don't have the settings right using the meter you can get black, underexposed, or white, overexposed.
