Yay flowers...

Even though you centered the flower, the composition still works for me with the stalk and its green leaves. If anything, I would have opted for a slightly shallower DOF as the ground has a little too much detail that is some what distracting.

Glad you noticed. I was wondering if the stalk coming in bottom left and up would work with flower dead center. Thought I'd try somethin' different.

I'd have liked the back more blurred as well, was trying different things, this is different focal length than I usually use...working on getting all the flower in focus, instead of nice blurred background and half the flower out of focus...which is what would have happened had I opened up to f/5.6

everyday experimenting...lol

That's funny, I just tried the same thing this morning. The stem coming from the bottom-left corner with the flower centered (or close)...here's my attempt (not to derail thread, simply a comparison):

NP. :-) I don't mind derailment at all if its along the lines of the subject matter.

To me, I think yours would have worked if the stalk was in focus more...it seems to meld in with the blurred background and not too distinguishable as its stalk. just my opinion though...

I agree with Ernicus as to your soft focus of the stem. In his picture my eye actually follows it, while in yours, I know it's there, but my focus stays with the flower. BTW, I do like it.
