Echoing what most folks have said:
Ditto on Understanding Exposure, IMO, the first thing you have to do is learn how to creatively expose a photo.
Aside from that, read the manual cover to cover and if you can find field guide on your camera, read that as well. For the latter, its much like a manual, but it tells you why you should use a particular option.
