Just want to say that I was here a couple years ago and I would post my pictures and I would get BRUTAL C&Cs from people here. Now, while I always felt like $hit after I would get the C&C that I requested... I learned and grew from it!
This tamer version of TPF, I feel, isn't pushing people to strive for excellence. I've seen a lot of pats on the back for work that is well below par, and, personally, if I had received that type of feedback with the work I was posting two years ago, I'm not sure that I would have grown so much in the short amount of time that I did.
I'm all for encouraging and being nice, but sometimes brutal honesty is what is needed for someone to grow in their craft.

Thanks for all the nice comments peeps!! haha

Go **** yourself.

:D Better?

We've never prevented not discouraged people from giving informative, detailed and constructive critique. What we have done, however, is attempt to remove insulting behaviour and comments that are simply snide or poking fun at the people for being "lesser" photographers.

We think that, as mods, we've moved the site toward being a more friendly and welcoming atmosphere and its something we strive to achieve. Along the way we have lost a few who, not for lack of trying, simply can't give critique without being more insulting to the person at a personal level. Sometimes this is intentional and sometimes its the manner in which they write. Whatever the reason we have to put the community first.

If you've ideas on how to improve critique or how to encourage more of our experienced members to air their thoughts and help give constructive input into peoples photography then please we are all ears to hear them.

In before someone brings up The Pact™!!

Wait... I just brought up... Ummm...

Not sure that counts...?

^^^^ How do you determine which posts should be portrait and which should be landscape?

You know, there is an old saying when confronting a difficult situation, where the person doesn't know which way is the best solution. So, instead of murmering "I don't know whether to $h!t or go blind", just close one eye and fart.

OP......
Post a photo or STFU.

There's just no pleasing people any longer. People tell the truth when giving critique and get jumped on for being brutal and not at all helpful. People sugar coat the truth and get jumped on for not being honest. Maybe we need another checkbox on the profile, something along the lines of "I do NOT want to hear the truth when critiquing my photos".

I will go find your last posted image and give you some CC.

I agree there's a lot of patting on the back for uh, images that could and do deserve more straightforward criticism. Everyone hates to hear negative criticism but I also feel it's a method that one can learn by and be motivated to do better. I guess there's a fine line between beating down on a newbie and giving tough love.

Great post Bill! You're really showing a lot of improvement. You just need that final push for adjectives and you'll be golden! Keep up the fricken amazing work dude!

I'm doing my part, lol!

Honestly, I'm not trying to though. I think people just take this whole "internet" stuff way too seriously. People think you're out to get them when you're just trying to help.

I think in the last 2 months, there have probably been at least three people that said they were leaving as a direct result of things I have said. I can't be the only one. I think that maybe because of the over-reaction of many of the new members, people may tend to 'play it safe' and not say anything that could be seen to be offensive. So, everything gets watered down in an attempt to be "PC".

Sometimes I read the comments and wonder why I haven't been banned, lol. In 6 years, I don't think I have ever been contacted by a mod and told to relax or anything like that. I'm not trying to be an ass or anything, but people just seem to interpret it that way. If I am doing something wrong, nobody in an official capacity has ever said anything about it to me...
