I Love You! Hedgecoe color project

Rollei Prego 140, Ektar 100, universal color kit. This was a Hedgecoe "using color"project. The goal was simply to look for color and implement it in a creative and "something to say" way. Out of 12 shots, this one was my favorite. He instructs to look for unusual color palates, juxtaposed, and contrasting scenes than try to say something with them. I can post a couple more if you want, let me know.

Pinball Pete's sign looks awesome. What a great neon sign. The little, modern LED readerboard with I Love You is a nice addition. Ektar 100 is a pretty amazing film.

Thanks Derrel. Yeah, it had everything that Hedgcoe was instructing. Only 2 or 3 had something to say even though I tried to do it. Hardest thing for me in photography, trying to say something in the photo, very allusive at this stage in my development.

I'm glad they rebuilt the Pinball Pete's place. In 2014 there was a fire or something there where they were shut down for a long time.

Hardest thing for me in photography, trying to say something in the photo>SNIP

I think it's pretty challenging to get a photo to say something. I'm not sure if that's even necessary most of the time. There are conflicting opinions on the idea of the photo that "says" something. I'm not sure if that lofty goal or ideal is even worth going for,much of the time.

Your probably right. I think Hedgcoe was getting you to think about color as a function of the photograph, or an opportunity to be creative. He really explores every aspect of an image in his projects. What does it say is something I picked up along the way and interpreted to his project.

In Color Charts/wheels identify Red and Blue are not complimentary colors. Thus they stand out and contrast more.
This image has those 2 colors as the 2 main objects "Pinball Pete's" and the Elephant. then the arrows covering more colors.

Luckily the entrance backdrop is black and makes the neon lighting really pop without any background distractions.
It is quite a striking image even walking past the place and grabs your attention.

Unfortunately the location of Pinball Pete's and the "mall" that it is in required the destruction of a very old theater which had a gigantic pipe organ where the pipe organ keyboard rose up from underneath the floor, while playing too. Quite a sight to see; I saw "Out of Africa" there. Luckily within a short walking distance there are 2 (or 3) other amazing pipe organ concert halls in addition to a Carillon. ... a little background.

Chick flick, hopefully the date was worth it.... If you went by yourself, maybe the shoot is off....lol
