What's new

I want my photo too look like this.

Pop up flash and point, just take a bad photo and you will have the same result

I think this was done more professionally than others are giving it credit for. The image was meant for it to look like he self took it with a pop up flash, BUT there are some tell tale signs it isn't. If it were just a pop up, he'd have some pretty unflattering shadows behind his hand (on the computer) [after further looking, the shadow is showing up in front of the hand, which gives away a light from above or behind him] and behind his head (left side). Also, notice the shadow on the left pillow and the way it is casted. This tells me there is another light source from a different angle of the camera (probably to get rid of the shadows I spoke of before)

So, my guess ... multiple strobe system or reflectors and converted to BW.

Possibly taken with a point and shoot camera...looks like he is holding it up with one hand (a-la typical myspace/facebook profile style picture)

But yep, popup flash which makes his face look a little too bright. The camera did hit the focus properly.

What do you like about the image?

How to take it?
- buy a decent P&S camera
- don't shower for a few days to get that grim look
- throw random cool props on a bed (DVD, laptop, water bottle) to enhance the coolness of the image
- hold the camera in one hand
- extend the arm attached to the hand that is holding the camera
- click the shutter with the finger attached to the hand attached to the arm

If you want a more professional look:
- get a good camera
- mount it on a tripod
- get a shutter release. You can use the 10 second timer, but best to pose yourself properly and then use the release. You can even extend an arm with the remote off camera to pretend you are doing a myspace/facebook picture
- prefocus your camera on where your eyes will be in the image
- throw random coolness props on the bed
- set a remote flash off to one side to get some decent lighting
- maybe add a reflector or shoot near a wall to reflect back some light
- click the remote release

Umm, how about the lights in the room? Maybe there is one on the wall up and to the left of his head like you said, and maybe he has a lamp on a nightstand next to the bed?

Just because there are other light sources doesn't mean this isn't a self taken photo lol. He's in a bedroom. Do you think he was sitting in the pitch black and just decided to take a picture of himself? I think not. :)

I think the shadow maybe a reflection from a mirror, glass from a picture frame or some shiny object.

Could be lights in the room, but if he's using a pop up flash like everyone is saying and it washed out his face like that (meaning it was bright), wouldn't you think it would kill those shadows in front of his hands and behind that pillow [the light source would be shooting DIRECTLY behind that pillow killing the shadow]

Just my opinion, take it as you will, but it seems like a VERY likely magazine type shot lol.
