But dubious in terms of legality on the close-in whale cow and calf shot they used, according to "some people"...It seems that approaching that close to a whale is likely to be ruled upon soon by US authorities,perhaps in the National Marine Fisheries Service, but who knows...another US agency might step in and regulate this class of flying craft. Only a few months ago, a whale watching boat's skipper used a quad copter to get very close to a whale off of California, despite laws stating that "aircraft and helicopters" must remain at least 1,000 feet from whales. It remains to be seen if these quad copters will be ruled to be "aircraft" or "helicopters" as far as marine mammal observation and recording activities.

I think that these small copters will continue to become more and more popular. I saw some pics done a few years ago from only 150 to 300 feet, along the California coast, done with a P&S digital and shown in Popular Photography magazine, and things looked really cool when seen from above. Some of the ugliest desalination plant lands looked utterly beautiful when seen from above. Really,really,really cool. I believe the guy who shot those photos was using kites, not copters, for his aerial photos.
