...for a 300 2.8. I have been drooling over this lens for months now and I want to try and buy one for sports / wildlife stuff. There are a few in good condition on eBay for 2500 but eBay is sketchy.

Sigma has a fixed 300 2.8 too don't they? ARGH I shoot night time / indoor sports several times a week it makes sense to own one but it is so expensive.

I have shot volleyball, soccer, basketball, football, lacrosse, rugby and baseball regularly (during the season of course) for the last couple years. For nighttime and indoor sports I have used the 80-200 2.8, and for outdoor daytime sports the 70-300 4.5-5.6 VR. Body is a D7000, upgrading to either a D700 or a D3 (maybe D3s) in the near future. If a good enough deal popped up on a 300 2.8 I would be tempted to buy that first honestly...

From all that I've heard their 120-300mm, even the older version, was either in line or a cut above their prime - the new OS edition of the 120-300mm is better still!

For indoor and sports a 300mm f2.8 would be ideal for light gathering - a 400mm f2.8 also being a very popular lens as well for that extra reach for outdoor events on a larger pitch.

For outdoor night sports I would just use the 300 on my D7000 to take advantage of the crop sensor. I shoot football near the line of scrimmage generally speaking so the 300 is very workable.

A 400 2.8......

With the exception of the Tokina 11-16 I have tried to remain true to sticking with Nikon glass, although the price of the sigma is tempting.

Since I'd be using it mostly for sports, autofocus is a must. A manual focus version would be cool to have for portraits, but I'd rather put that money into an AF version.
