kinda looks like an osprey

Hmm, I don't know; looks more like some type of hawk to me than an osprey. But my raptor-ID skills are limited to: Eagle, Hawk, Something Else. :lmao:

This is either: Hawk, or Something Else. :D
Where's coastalconn? He'll know. At least, if it's an osprey, he'll know.

Identical to the one in my yard earlier in the week. A cooper's hawk.

I'm still at work, need to see it on a puter instead of my phone. Osprey.. No way. Where are you located? I'm think ferigonus hawk juvenile perhaps or perhaps a juvi rough legged or harrier. I'll have a better idea when I see it bigger and I know where you are.. :)

It's for someone else and I don't know where they are from but am guessing north midwest area by some of their previous posts. I've had it Id'ed also as a Cooper's but it was an educated guess, so who knows. Also just saw on another forum where someone says it is a sharp-shinned hawK

I've had a better look on my big screen. Do you happen to know the size of it? Rough guide is smaller than a crow it is a sharpie, bigger than a crow it is a Cooper's. There is one other possibility, what I meant to say earlier wasn't harrier, it was Northern Goshawk. If you have another shot showing the tail feathers, a Coopers will have evenish banding while a goshawk will have irregular banding.. It is immature whatever it is...

Did you take this picture in Florida?

Looks like a juvenile Cooper's Hawk but Broad-Winged Hawks also winter in southern Florida and look very similar. Do you have another picture that shows the underside of the wings or a better view of the tail?

I don't know where it was taken. Was trying to find out for someone on another forum.

I hope you don't mind me posting this on your thread, but I don't really want to start a new topic for it...

Out walking the dogs yesterday (Kamloops, BC, Canada) I came across this bird. My picture is AWFUL, I couldn't get autofocus to lock on it and I don't know if my eyes are good enough to manually focus on something so small. Anyways I am only posting it because I want to try to identify the bird. I think it is either a Merlin or a Prairie Falcon but I'm not sure how to distinguish between the two.

bc-steve, This one is slightly hard to ID. Prairie Falcons would be very odd in Canada in winter. There are 2 types of Merlins. I'm attaching a Taiga Merlin, There is ironically a Prairie Merlin and I think that is what you saw... I think.... I use Cornell's page for ID. Merlin, Identification, All About Birds - Cornell Lab of Ornithology

Sorry about the noise, this is before I figured out post processing...

Thanks, I think you're right, it probably is a Merlin. I feel like I'm learning a lot about bird identification these days.

and I wouldn't worry too much about the noise, your pic is about 10,000x better than mine!
