im getting tired of winter

It's been 70 degrees here every day since November. I miss snow.

The problem with snow isnt nececerially AF its metering. You need to step down 1 stop or so by using your exposure compensation feature when shooting backrounds of bright snow/beaches. Thats what the manual of my (Manual focus, Apature priority) camera says. So do this, or use spot metering instead of CWA.

Interestingly enough, I used spot metering in the snow the other day and changed my exposure from -.7 to 0. Granted, it was snowing and overcast, but still, just trying to illustrate that it depends on the situation.

Come on down to Southern California. The place where you can get away with only bathing twice a week because you are being drought friendly. Dirty car? Not a problem, everyone will understand.

There may be a snowflake or two in the mountains just in case you get homesick.

Ignore any little tremblers you may feel; or just turn on vibration reduction.

My understanding is that Designer and D-B-J are correct in that your meter will underexpose a predominantly white or bright scene so you need to increase the exposure to compensate. Go positive or step up not down.

At least you guys are getting snow and able to get some nice winter shots. It's starting to warm up now but there for a while is was just plain cold with zero to little precipitation. The ground was yuck, everything dead or dormant and the skies all blown out looking. The time change sucks even worse! I rarely have any time for sunrise or sunset photos...but when I do it's usually been 15 degrees and overcast.
