In the market for a new lens.

Unfortunately, it's not a matter of saving for it. My wife and I are gifting ourselves a portion of money we just received. We're allowing ourselves a limited one time splurge on anything we want. I'm choosing a new lens but the limitation is funds. The 70-200 f/2.8 just simply won't be in the budget.

For me with the 50, the DOF is so shallow at 1.8 for what I use it for, 1.4 wouldn't even be useful. For what it is worth, I have had amazing luck with Tamron lenses, but I've never tried their 70-200 2.8. L glass has never been in my budget and I'm currently saving for the Tamron.

This is unfortunate as the 70-200mm in the long run would end up saving you having to be concerned about buying another lens down the road. Good luck with the lens you do end up with, whatever you choose may put limitations on some of the things you want to shoot, and when that happens, work around them and try new things.

I just bought the lenses. I picked the Canon 70-200 f/4 and the Canon EOS 50mm f/1.8 II. With tax and 2 day shipping, it was just under $600.

How about a used 80-200 f2.8L "magic drainpipe"? It's the forerunner of the current 70-200 L lenses. I found one on ebay in mint condition about 2 years ago to save some money over the then-current 80-200 f2.8L mark i. And it's black. Although mine was manufactured 20 years ago, my results 2 weeks ago shooting wide open at 200mm are razor sharp!
