I would recommend either using tissue paper, using one of those white translucent film canisters with a hole cut out for the flash, or by using a small yoghurt pot with a hole cut out of it. These are all kind of short-term fixes, though. You should really be aiming towards getting a dedicated flashgun.

i've found that a paper towel folded in half can soften the light pretty good. i've only used it on my on camera flash a few times, but i've used it on external flashes a decent amount and i've been happy with the results
