Indoor Nighttime Portrait

I think the exposure of the subject is about right if "runaway" is the intent. You still have plenty of detail showing in the shadows. What's neglected IMO is more cowbell with the background secondary subject. The headlights are easily recognized, but I'm confused with is the rearward reflection. The addition of having the dome light on, outlining the accomplice, along with a "front porch" light that slightly illuminates the car would make this a more complete scene.

Another thought on lighting the main subject would be to use a strip box that is a stop or two over exposed with a sliver of light, as if the parent is opening the bedroom door and surprising the young lady. You would still want to light the bedroom much as you have already.

what caused it to be so soft? is it just bad focus. It is a self portrait and i used the self timer also autofocus on my camera doesnt work so maybe i missed the focus just a little.
