So I decided I need to start storing all my source code in something. Since I'm doing Windows development and using Visual Studio, I figure "TFS!"

So I install TFS and then realize "oops, I have SQL Express on my box... I'm not relying on manual backups for my source code, thank you- no way no how." So I backup the databases, uninstall SQL express and pull out my SQL 2008 R2 DVD.

My server is in my basement and I'm a lazy sot, so I stick the DVD in my drive up here in my office on my workstation and share it, then run the install across the net because I'm clever like that. I get about 2/3 of the way through the install and hit some copy error claiming a network issue. I shrug and hit retry figuring it just barfed on the network on some huge file. It sits for 5 minutes and does it again.

Le sigh.

FINE.

So, still being lazy, I figure I'll copy the media over. That works better sometimes.

Nope. Same network error.

FINE.

So I tromp downstairs and put the DVD in the server. Tromp back up here (using RDP) and kick off the install again.

Same failure. Same file.

What the heck? Well, maybe I can copy the files up to the server. So I drag/drop them to the desktop... ooo that does all kinds of weird stuff.

Ok, must be a bad DVD.

So I burn a new one and bring that one downstairs.

Same error.

What the hell?

So I decompress the ISO to a folder on my stupid USB drive, share the USB drive, and now I'm installing from that across the network, and that works perfectly.

maybe you should install some viruses, oh wait, you have windows, never mind it's bad enough.

Sorry Manny. Not 100% sure of all of that but I know my frustrations when I can't get my PC or network to work like I want it.

My favorite was when the dependencies between SDK, DDK, and some other bits and pieces were such a mess that that correct answer was to install everything twice, so that all the pieces had been installed BOTH before AND after all the other pieces, resolving all dependencies.

I've found that when burning DVD's for anything - which I rarely do anymore, my best bet is to burn them at the absolute slowest speed possible. If I try to let the computer auto set the speed I usually run into problems just like you describe later - if not on the original system I made the DVD usually it's on another system with a different DVD drive. As a result I don't usually do DVD's if I can at all avoid them. I use either thumb drive or I copy the ISO to the network machine, decompress it and run the install that way. Seems to work a whole lot better.

re: source control off-site... mmmmmmm.... It's an interesting idea, but I think if I did that I'd do a file based SVN solution and store it on skydrive or something. This, however, gives me the added bonus of continuing to work with TFS, which comes up in my job now and again.

robbins- hey you know... good point. I was just burning it at max.... maybe I should step it down a bit. It's been so long since I've created a coaster that I've gotten lazy about it. (and lol on being continental)

terri - lol, yes. I should just keep it unversioned so I can overwrite my changes by accident like I usually do.

If you want a stable Windows OS I'm sure I could find my Windows 2.1 - 5.25inch floppies around here somewhere. It has a small footprint and on today's processors it just screams !! Screams for what though I don't know


ooh .. I'm also fairly sure I have the installs for SQL Server 6.0, 6.5, 7.0 & 2005 just in case you want to try one of those.

I also may have an original beta of SourceSafe. But "Safe" should not have been part of the software title.

Check your port dongle as they can get SCSI. Also reset the paper tray then power off and on.
