Ink jet v laser ink costs

I have just purchased an Epson Acculaser C1100 printer for printing good draft quality photos. The quoted toner costs are 3.8p at 5% coverage for A4 prints. If I assume an A4 photo print with a border at 90% coverage it follows it will be 18 times 3.8p = 68.4p. This seems extortionate.

It suggests a cost of 50c for A3 laser prints. Everybody knows laser prints cost less than inkjet prints but this looks far from cheap.

Does any body have any experience of laser toner costs?
