Inside shooting, cheerleaders inside :D

I went to a local bar here in FL to see some of the Tampa Bay Lightning players for a meet and greet tonight. It was kind of dark inside, and I wasn't able to get too close without being in people's way so it was a bit of a task to say the least . This is the second day shooting with my new Nikon D3000 w/18-55mm VR. I was pretty impressed with the way that these pictures came out as far as lighting, but it was trickey to get the focus in check. I shot using the night portrait. Any advice on situations like these?

These were shot using the Auto feature.........no bueno

Then I switched over to the night portrait
