I ran mine for 2017, but I really only started using Instagram at the start of 2017. With 200 or so followers now, I only had maybe 100 by the summer. So my top 9 were naturally photos from the last few months as there was much more followers when I posted new stuff. (Not everyone will scroll down through a years worth even though there may be photos there they like.) I'd love to see a statistic on "% of likes vs followers at the time" list. The more you reach a stable follower list throughout the year, the closer that top 9 will reflect the "most liked" (Not necessarily the best... baby pictures/ kitten pictures tend to rank high regardless of quality)

I have very few followers, mostly friends and relatives. A blurry snapshot of my dog or a quick selfie with my daughter will get 10x as many likes as a landcape shot that I had to get up at 4am and hike 2 miles for or a flower photo that I spent 20 minutes arranging to get the right lighting.

Huh, I didn't realize you were on IG. Just started following you.

And, I agree. Quick snapshots seem to get many more "likes" than planned shots. Most of my followers are family/friends, as well, so they probably don't care for the street/landscape/etc shots as much as they do for the more personal shots.

But apparently, it’s for photos?

So I guess Instagram immediately measures in digital weight, your self worth as a photographer, 1,000 <3 = 1 kilogram of photographic genius.

How would you define a "stable" follower list? My follower number fluctuates through the week. At times, I would loose more followers than gain. Other times, I get 100+ followers because someone shared my photos.

By stable I certainly dont mean constant. but if you are at 7350 followers today and were at 6500+ last year, that might mean a ~10% increase, which makes comparing your likes from Jan through December fairly more reasonable than someone who went from let's say 100 followers to 1000 in the same span. a photo with 650 likes in jan would be %10 in Jan, vs just shy of %9 compared to the other case of 50 likes out of 100 vs 50 likes out of 1000. (%50 vs %5).

Specific stats really dont mean much anyways. Many "followers" are simply trying to get more followers themselves and after that first initial look at your photos never pay attention again. Some people will like every post that goes through heir feed etc... So it's more just for curiosity sake. Some people will like the first 2-3 from a set and then simply skim the rest so the order a photo appears within a set can make a difference on it's "Like" count. All sorts of variables which make those "top 9" lists not necessarily your "best" photos.

In this context the word 'gram' isn't 1kilogram = 1000 gram.
The word gram comes from the Greek word "gramma" which means message/writing.
Instagram must be seen as the opposite of Telegram (a message that took a while to arrive), Instagram can be interpreted as a direct/instant (insta) message (gram). In this digital era messages can easely be photographs when we use our imagination. Think Facebook, it's a website and absolutely not a book with 'normal' pages.
