Can others edit my Photos
Photos NOT OK to edit
I'm new to photography and new to the forums, so please be patient as I learn my way around.

I have some Christmas loot to spend and I am trying to justify the purchase of an iPad, which I don't really need, but I really want anyway. ;) Have any of you found an iPad to be useful to you specifically relating to your photography and, if so, how?
Thanks,
Gonzo

Well, I'm reading TPF right now on an iPad :lmao:

I have a lot of ebooks about photography on mine and use it a lot when traveling. Frees up luggage space and weight and still allows me to browse around with a wide variety of photo books.

Ann, can you recommend any particularly useful ebooks or apps?

Ann,
My wife and I both have Kindles because we love to read and we travel a lot. I have not been using it for photography books since it does not have color or graphics for illustrations. What ebook reader program do you use on your iPad?
Thanks,
Gonzo

I am using goodreader, as it is good for pdf files and you can underline, etc.

THe Kindle is going to be better in direct sunlight, but it isn't as good for graphics, and since I am only downloading photobooks with images that wasn't going to work.

I do a lot of iphonegraphy and so have quite a few apps and they , or a lot of them download to the ipad when it syncs.

I have tested the camera connnection kit that one can buy for the Ipad and it worked with the usb cable directly until the last upgrade and now there is an issue. That can be overcome with a work around. I think Apple was attempting to cut down on power loss. Anyway, one just has to use a powered usb hub.

I haven't downloaded any photos as that wasn't my intent, but because of the photo apps that have sync up it would give me a bigger surface to work on than the iphone.

There is a program called Penultimate that i really like to make notes for myself. It was on sale during Black Friday promos and cost .99. Best bargin in the world.

You can download a Kindle app , I am not sure how it works, but I was trying to help my sister-in-law with hers and so i loaded it and it was free.

Right now i have about 13 ebooks , with a huge amount of photos. About 18 books with a lot of images, graphics. Some have over 400 pages and off the top of my head I don"t think I am even up to using a g of memory and that includes a lot of photo apps that I wasn't intending on downloading to the Ipad and a couple of games.

If I wanted to use it as storage for photos, which had crossed my mind at the beginning I probably wouldn't have gotten it as a notebook or small lap top would be more efficient, but again that wasn't my intent.

I do think if I wanted to make a visual portfolio it would be better than a laptop, easier to handle and a lot more sexy;)

heyjoe, what kinds of apps are you looking for?

PS, I would seriously recommend a zaggshield. I put a sheild on a Wacom Citnit tablet and it was a nighmare, so I just went to Bestbuy got the shield and paid them to put it on. They said, oh, it was easy, and I said, OK. but go ahead and do it anyway. Took him almost 25mintues and it was worth the $12 I paid to have it done.

There are a few apps that do help out:
- Digital grey card - free app with upgrade options
- DOF calculator - enter your lens/camera/distance and it spits back DOF. Really helpful when you are working with shallower depths.
- there are lots of free sketchpads which are great for organizing your lighting set ups
- use any number of apps for keeping photo ideas and notes

Side note: We run a weekly news show at our school and the ipad is used to cycle images captured from that week before the show airs. We use goodreader to do this as we are often gathering images from several locations and goodreader allows for file transfer without synching.

Truthfully, we initially bought ours because of the ability to play movies and the relative cheapness of games for long car rides (amuses the kids). As usayit points out, it is very good for web browsing and it is my first choice because of battery life. I actually use it much more than I ever thought I would and with four kids, it's difficult to get my hands on it. I don't know how anxious you are for yours, but the current version is nearing replacement as the one year anniversary approaches. You may want to think about what the new iteration might bring.

Thanks for the tip on that site, I will have to check it out in more depth later today.

There is a new iPad that is due to be released in April. It will have two cameras one front for Skype/iChat idea and one rear for photos like the iPhone and many other phone devices. It will also have a USB port.

For reading we use the Nook. :D

Heard about the cameras, and frankly, it doesn't interest me. The front may be very good for video confernening, but can you image walking up to someone and lifting an Ipad and taking a photo. ;)

Yesterday I was at brunch with some friends at a very high end resturant and there was this terrific Santa greeting people moving from table to table and he had the greatest bread. It was real and just look like a Santa should.

When we left, he was standing at the top of this amazing staircase and I stopped and took a shot with my Iphone then decided to go up and get a close up. He was wonderful the shot was great and that would not have happened with an IPAD. But everyone is intitled to their own opinion and methods of working.

Yeah, those same rumors also said it would be out for the 2010 holiday season. Must be from the same guy that starts the Canon rumors. :D

Apple almost never releases any new products after the fall launches (Sept/Oct). I also think the next ipad won't come out quickly after Christmas because Apple won't want customers kicking themselves for not waiting. It may be announced sometime in January, but I would bet that the release date would be much later.
