Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
I have a D3100....been hearing that i should just wait till i can save up for the D7000, rather than upgrade now to a D5100. This decision is killing me so much. I have 3 days to decide so I can return my D3100. SHould I just get nicer lenses???

Is a Photo Like this possible with w/ a D3100?

To the peeps who have seen my recent post on this issue...sorry. I get so moved when I see pictures like that and really endeavor to take some like those someday.....I just want to know if i have a good enough camera to do so.

Yes photos are possible like that with the D3100 with enough editing software...of course

Well, assuming I want to make as little edits as possible, will the D5100 suffice or should I just move up to the D7000?

I'd say a wide enough lens is more important here. An ND filter would also help achieve a longer exposure. You'd porobably have to take a few exposures and stack them to exposure both the water and the sky properly. Of course you could also use a grad ND filter for that, but I don't know if stacking two filters is a good idea (if possoble at all).

No difference at all.

Of course. It's possible with any half-decent,modern d-slr camera and a tripod. You need to be there when the light is good. THis is not as much the "camera", as it is being in a cool-looking location, with good light.

Software, filters and lenses is much more important for this photo then the camera.

What they said. There are very few pictures that are not possible with any given camera body. The big differences that would make some photos possible with the higher range camera bodies would tend to be ones that rely on better low light capability, faster continuous shooting, or bracketing (for HDR). Image quality on the D3100 is good, I think. I have been very pleased with mine, so far anyway. THat particular type of photo is certainly well within the capability of a D3100. Like someone said above, good location, a neutral density (ND) gradient filter for the sky and a tripod are probably what make that photo what it is.

Of course you can do that with many dslr. The hard part is figuring out how it was done. Its not the camera its the knowledge and skill of a photographer.

Keep in mind that the camera body is only one of the ingredient of making a good photo. It is like a fry pan. You can buy a $100 one, or a $10 one. Both help the cook to make a good meal. When the meal is served, you cannot tell which one is made with the $100 pan and which one is made with the $10 pan. Of course, the cook may tell you the more expensive one is better because it cook more evenly, the handle is more ergonomic, it is heavier so he/she can feel the cooking ...... But at the end, the pan is only part of the ingredient.

I don't you'd see any difference in quality if you were to take the same landscape shot on a D5100 or D7000. Just a quick google search and it seems they have similar sensors. Your camera is fine.
You need a good tripod, wide angle lens, and patience. Shoot landscapes around sunset and sunrise.

I would argue that the images you show are possible with a nice point and shoot, if you know what you are doing.

Yes this shot is possible. It most likely was done using the camera and lenses as opposed to software ( although basic edits on color and sharpness were most likely done in post. ) I would guess it was a camera on tripod with an ND filter and a graduated ND filter as well although there could have been some HDR used which would be software based.
