Is f/2.8 fast enough for city photography?

I just bought a D750 and presently only have a 50mm f/1.8 prime lens with it. I'm going to Italy next month and I'll only have enough money to buy one lens before my trip, so I'm torn between 35mm f/1.4 or a 24-80mm f/2.8-4. The 24-80mm is going to be more versatile in the long run but I can hold off on that if the 35mm is going to get me better pictures from Italy. But maybe the 50mm will be sufficient for that?

Get the zoom lens; you'll be really glad you have that 24mm wide end. You have a D750. If you don't have sufficient illumination raise the ISO value; you have one of the best low-light cameras ever made. Don't be afraid to use it.

I'm in Rome now. I'd be completely lost without much 24-70 f2.8. If you only bring one lens, bring a zoom!!!!!!

Italy gets plenty of light. I live much further north and rarely use wider than f/5.6 in town.

You have a D750, you don't need the speed.

So you guys are saying I should get the prime? ;-)

Thanks for the input!

Everyone else says zoom, so I'm going to say prime because I like primes.

I'll say use the 50. Its the one you know and love ❤️

If it was me, I'd probably end up mounting my 20 1.8G and hardly take it off.

But i'd bring along either a 35mm or 50mm and my 70-200 f/4 in a nice shoulder messenger type bag.

That's probably how I'd roll.

I have the 24-85/2.8-4.0 (not 24-80) and it's my main lens for that focal length. you'll love it. Though get a used version and not new. They are an old design lens and may seem a bit clunky by comparison to a HIGH priced 24-70/2.8. But for the price they actually get a very high DxO rating above the 3rd market 24-70/2.8s probably primarily due to price.

I also have 50mm lenses but prefer the 24-85. I've actually been selling my primes because I just don't use them except for one 50/1.8 AF-D as I use that with closeup filters.

Just to make sure, you're talking about this lens ==> AF Zoom-NIKKOR 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF from Nikon
