Is Nikon beginning a 'Death Spiral'?

OMG--gasoline prices went up last night...gasoline business headed into a death spiral!

dont forget milk.
I guess dairy farmers are about to go belly up too.
I am lenstate intolerant, I have to use film cameras to ease the bloating and blowout.

I'm getting on ebay and going back to my Pentax 110 super. Best camera system evah.
It's the film camera I miss the most, although I did also love my mamiya 645.

I blame it on Ken Rockwell. Glad he's not a Canon proponent. :allteeth:

c'mon Derrel/ that was funny but you're veering the thread!

I guess I'm veering a thread that began with a ditch-cruise written all over it from the get-go. The issue is that this entire thread was built upon a, let's call it an accidental misunderstood notion, shall we.

"Nikon recently announced an across the board price increase of a whopping 18%."

Not. Even. Remotely. True. That announcement was for the JAPAN market! For lenses and flash units. But NOT affecting the new 200-500VR, not affecting the 18-55 VR-G, not affecting the 24-70f/2.8 VR, and not affecting the 24mm f/1.8-G.
Nikon Japan announces price increases of up to 18% for lenses and flash units

Then we hear "evidence" brought in, stating that Sigma, and Tamron, and Pentax represent threats to Nikon's business. Again, uhhhh, no, not really. Pentax is the brand that has been sold and bought, twice, in recent memory. Pentax is the lemonade stand kid down the block. Nikon is Pepsi. Canon is Coca~Cola. Tamron would be Kool-Aid.

Nikon recently announced an across the board price increase of a whopping 18%. What is behind this. The industry is in the midst of a very strong competitive phase with several manufacturers stepping up their product lines in both quantity and more improtantly quality. Sigma, Tamron, Pentax, SONY!

Nikon not to long ago dropped producing their own sensors in favor of buying from Sony. Sony at the same time began its massive surge into the camera market with its advanced senser designs used in the A7's. Now Sony's business practices in the past have not been very kind to competitors. Nikon is a competitor...do you suppose Sony might be putting the squeeze on Nikon? Nikon is no longer between a rock and a hard place it has been squashed all over the hard place by the big rock. It has no other place to go for sensors of high quality.

My opinion is that Nikon's future is not bright.

Nikon has made their own sensors for thier flagship bodies(D3, D3s, D4, D4s, D5, Df) which I would consider very high quality sensors.

here's a list of Nikon cameras and who makes the sensors for each. Sony makes the majority of them.

Derrel. you have made this more a 'personal' attack than an address of the issue. That you have issues with my wording and phrasing has no bearing on the issue I brought up. Put in your arguments pro and con and leave the personal crap out of it. Everyone realizes you like Nikons, so what. Lots of people like lutefisk too, but it doesn't change what it is, nor how it is made.

Yes I know. I was replying to this statement

"It(nikon) has no other place to go for sensors of high quality."

If push came to shove I'm sure they would be shoving nikon sensors in all their bodies.

It doesn't matter anyways. Nikon could disapear tomorrow. I'll use my camera till it's dead and then buy into a new system. It's just a tool anyways. I'll use whatever.

Isn't this all a moot point anyway? I mean nobody actually makes DSLR's anymore, do they? Haven't they all been replaced by cell phones and mirrorless cameras by now?

I could have sworn we saw like 1000+ articles about how the DSLR would be deader than Elvis by now for several years running, so I'm a bit confused.

Sorry big D, but you started a flame-bait type of thread, with factually INCORRECT information. Plenty of just flat-out, uninformed nonsense. It was not that many weeks ago that you called me a jack*** here in open forum. I never reported that, but I did see that one of the moderators cleaned up your language.

As far as personal attack...you seem to fail to see that when somebody corrects very BASIC, easily-researched news items, like "18 percent across-trhe-board price hikes"... you know untruths, people who know a bit more about the situation might weigh in. Sorry if you felt attacked when your flame-bait thread went off the rails. You seem to not be aware of some very basic facts about Sony and Nikon's relationship. Google is your buddy.

Nikon makes the steppers on which Sony manufactures its sensors. In the D2x generation, Nikon designed the sensors they wanted, then had them made by Sony.

Sony's sensor-making ability, their sensor-making machinery, is made by those crazy kids at Nikon. This is what's called a mutualistic symbiotic relationship in the natural world; BOTH parties benefit from the relationship. It appears that Nikon and Sony have had a cooperative relationship for over a decade now, and both benefit from the ties they have.

Nikon can buy sensors from Sony without the need to incur all the production costs, then builds top-flight electronics that maximize the sensor performance in actual cameras, and Sony gets the prestige that Nikon cameras garner in the press, and in the exchange, Sony also sells sensors to Nikon AND to Pentax AND to other companies. Sony's fastest area of growth is, I believe, in sensor sales. Selling a sensor is probably higher in profit than making the whole danged camera and selling 'that thing'...not too long ago, Sony acquired all of Toshiba's sensor intellectual property and business.

Your death spiral theory, while cute, seems to ignore the actual Nikon-Sony business relationship. Nikon makes the machinery that makes it possible for Sony to build sensors.
