Is photoshop 7 the way to go.

I'm sure this has been asked a thousand times, so I appologize in advance, but I'm new to this forum and couldn't find anything with the search function. Right now I'm using the PhotoImpression Cannon utility software that came with my camera. Is photoshop the way to go?

yep... Photoshop rules when it comes to digital manipulation.

And keep in mind that it is illegal to download software from such programs like Kazaa, eDonkey or eMule...

Even though it's easy, fast and readily available. You must always get the licenced copy

You can get an LE version of P'shop - usually free with scanners and such. Just as good as the full version, it doesn't have all the pro bells and whistles - you'll never use them anyway.

Photoshop Elements is the "light" version of Photoshop. It's a great program. It has most of the same functionality as it's bigger brother...and it's a little more user friendly.

I use Photoshop CS. It's a powerful tool and I'm sure I don't even know a 1/10 of what it can do

I am old school. I use pshop 5.5, it delivers the basic goods you need for a good digital photograph, i have v. 6 and 7 and used them... but i still ended up going to 5.5 .

There is a pretty steep learning curve, you can get the basics down easily but it is a vast program. I just recently discovered the wonders of batch processing photos in pshop- tis a glorious thing

I'd recommend Photoshop Elements. I bought it from Walmart for $60, and it has done everything I've needed. I think if you're not looking for doing professional photo manipulation it will suit what you need.

At the risk of being the oddball... I personally like Paint Shop Pro. I started with 3.x, now have 7, am thinking about 9. I work in a sign shop where we do large format digital prints, and the has been bent on Photoshop his whole life. I downloaded to one of the computers version 9 trial of PSP, and did some manipulation to show him what it can do.

Now, I'm not saying Photoshop isn't great. It is, and I use it for specific functions (the .gif export wizard is fantastic), but if you can swing it, I prefer both programs. They do things differently, and you may like some aspects of each. To me, it's lie the difference between an adding machine and a calculator. Punch some numbers up on each and you'll know what I mean.

Before you go spending hundreds of dollars, give PSP a try. The trial version is free, so what have you got to lose? For that matter, I believe that Photoshop has a free download of CS right now, so try it out concurrently and see which one thinks the way you do.
