I have carried cameras-film TLRs, film SLRs, DSLRs, etc-into stores, restaurants, nightclubs, etc, all over the world. Some folks thought me a tourist, others asked if I was a photojournalist, and a few sexy ladies asked me to shoot some images for their model portfolios...which made me money, and got me some dates as well. I seemed confident, and seemed to handle my cameras as if I knew what I was doing, so no one thought me "weird."

The best camera is the camera you have with you. But if you have a choice between a camera phone or point-and-shoot or a DSLR with a good lens, the DSLR will almost always give you far more flexibility in how you shot, compose, and create pictures. The other ones (camera phone, point and shoot) mostly just take snapshots. An artist creates pictures.
