Is This Normal (Surfer) Behaviour?

Spent a few hours shooting some surfers at San Clemente, Ca. A recurring theme is a board getting kicked straight up. Almost looks like it's a ritual. (I haven't surfed in over a decade and I don't remember seeing it then.)

These are my first attempt at shooting surfing. Got quite a few good ones.

Don't they still use a tether?

Yeah, it's probably the new cool thing to do right before you wipe. (or whatever they call it)

Most of them didn't in this small area. It's just north of Trestles. There were
5 to 10 people there, including a couple girls. Only a few leashed their boards.

great shots, i have attempted to do some surfing and i realized that you really need something at 300mm or greater. what lenses are you using?

Thanks. I'm using a 7D and a Canon 70-200mm L f2.8 II.
