What's new

ISO, D40, ME or the camera?

^^^ as I always say, if it works for you, great.

I've been "more down" on the D40 lately mainly because I've gotten frustrated with people having them being defensive about their choice to own one, and using that as justification to play off anything "better" as "just a waste of money" or "intended to make the people who own them feel cool", etc.

There's really nothing wrong with them. They work fine. They are, however, limited, and very much geared towards a "less serious" shooter.

Anyway, take this as my apology for sounding like I'm crapping all over the D40. I'm not... not really. I'm just annoyed this week. :)

I will confess to getting defensive about the D40, but not at the expense of better cameras, I know they are better, I don't consider them a waste of money. I just disgree with those who say the D40 is junk. I own it because it does what I want, it has enough MP and I've never been one for bells and whistles. I'm just as happy shooting with my old sheet film camera, or the Pony mentioned in my signature, as any modern does-everything camera.

Heck - my car is 38 years old - who needs modern conveniences?

There's no such thing as a junk camera these days, but they all suffer from one problem, the guy with his/her finger on the butten! I,ve seen some great shots from skilfull use of phone cameras!

But that's kind of my biggest issue with the D40... it's not a matter of lack of modern conveniences, it's a matter of taking your old fashioned necessities away from you.

No aperature (or is it shutter?) dial on the body? That's like taking your headlight switch and sticking it under the spare tire in the trunk. See what I mean?

Actually it would be more like holding down a button and turning your windshield wiper speed to turn the lights on.

The nikon D40, Canon XT, and Sony A100 all lack this feature.

Its not like they took the dial and put it in the battery holder... Just to save size/space they instead set a button to do its job.

Here you definitely have a point - I miss having the aperture ring on the lens. I also miss my one-touch zooms!
