ISO Question

Regards your original problem, I'd just go 1600 and live with the grain. Can look great on a B&W image. No point buying 800 and then finding out it's too slow!!!

I think i'll probably buy two rolls of 800, and two rolls of 1600

You can always push 800 film to 1600. If you get there and realize 800 won't be fast enough, set your ISO manually to 1600 and fire away. Most 1600 speed film is 800 speed anyway. You'll have to decide before you start shooting obviously, and shoot the entire roll that way.

have a friend take your camera into the bar and set the ISO to 800 then use the cameras meter to decide if there is enough light 1 to 1/2 stop over what you would like. If not, set the camera as if there was 1600 film in it and test again, and so on until you know what film you'll need to use. giving yourself a half stop to full stop extra space means more likely than not you'll be fine, and even have room to stop down the aperture a little more.

of course this may require a quick lesson on your camera and its features, as well as using a light meter.

Exposure seems fine to me....
