It simply lacks the greatness suggested by its price tag.

Hi ...following up on replies from some previous questions.

What is the best standard zoom lens for a Nikon DX format camera. I was thinking Nikon AF-S DX 17-55mm f2.8G IF-ED ..But Photozone sum it up as " It simply lacks the greatness suggested by its price tag." So what do you guy's think is best quality standard zoom glass for a camera such as D7000.

Yep my older non-VC Tamron 17-50 f2.8 has been a workhorse last 3yrs. and achieves 80%-90% of what the nikon version achieves in Image IQ depending on who you talk too. And at a fraction of the Nikon.

I used to own the Nikon 17-55 f/2.8.

For event/reportage it is awesome.

At 55mm, f/2.8, and focused at infinity, it's a little less than awesome considering it's $1400.

If I shot DX i would totally buy it again if i wanted a midrange zoom.

I wouldn't ever dump that much money on a lens which is limited to cameras with APS sized sensors only. If I needed something as wide as 17mm I'd be looking at the 17-35mm f/2.8 for no other reason than potential future use. If you're dropping this kind of money on a lens, no doubt you'll eventually drop that much money on a full frame camera.
