I've had Flickr for a while and I just upgraded to a Pro account.

How do some of you use Flickr? I was thinking of backing up all my ORF files that I have taken. However it doesn't allow me to do that.

I just have the pro account so it wont' limit me to 200 pictures and I can have unlimited sets.

Yeah same here. But it doesn't allow me to upload RAW files. I was thinking about backing everything up. So I'm only uploading high quality jpegs. Hopefully they'll be able to handle raw files in the future.

Just a personal thing, but I don't want my original files outside of my control - I don't believe the contractuals wrapped up around the Pro account are anything like strong enough to ensure my rights are protected. Likewise I don't put full size JPGs there either.

Not one photo server, pro-account or not, will ever get anything but downsized .jpeg-files from me. It would not even occur to me to put out full-size RAWs into the internet. Why would anyone want to do that?

I don't know, I have mine on my personal web server but that has a few layers of passwords. That's just a fail safe. I've also got mine backed up on a harddrive and CD's just in case.

get an external hard drive or dvd's I think Flikr compresses the files slightly so You may not want to rely on them for keeping your images crisp and perfect

Flickr isn't a "storage" site per se; the only files it can store are the non-RAW files you upload. But then why do you want to use Flickr for that. I nice 500GIG (or smaller external HD) can be had for peanuts these days. Assuming you keep every photograph (including the bad ones) you'd be dumping a 2GIG card 250 times with over 40K RAW files.

It just seems a bit easier to not have hard drives laying all over the place. Well at least now I don't have a restriction to my uploading for the next two years. Doh! I really appreciate all of your input. I really do like reading everyone's personalities in their responses

Well you could backup really important files to a GMail account until you had them on some other off-site backup.

Hard drives are nice and cheap and ideal for backup but could get stolen or destroyed in a fire so off site backup is still important!

But if you mean publicly accessible internet, I agree.

Initially, they'd be full size, but now I'm resizing everything to low-mid size jpgs. Oh and the contractuals are close to garbage, but they look nice. It's to cover their own ass legally.

It just seems a bit easier to not have hard drives laying all over the place.

Not that big of a deal, I have two western digital My Books, a 250GB and a 500GB. Takes up less room than a 100 cakebox of blank media. If you get the 1.5'' externals, those take up even less room.

I think you can store more than 200 photos on the free flickr accounts, but other people can only see your most recent posted photos once you go over that 200.
