That represents a lot of work. A friend used to carve out chains but without having the stock pre-cut in the X cross section as your neighbour has.

Neat! I carved one chain of about 10 links using nothing but a pen knife and a small set of wood carving tools. It took me forever and I have not had the urge to try it again. Kudos to your neighbor for his patience and skill.
