Both have pros and cons. Tail-draggers are generally better suited to rough airfields, much like many of those during WWII. On the other hand, fighters that are tail-draggers are sometimes very difficult to taxi because visibility to the front is blocked by the engine. Watch them when they taxi during old war movies and you'll see them weave from side to side so that the pilot can see what's in front of him.Iirc most fighter planes of the era are all tail draggers. Something to with the balance of the plane for better maneuvering. Then again I could be full if it.
The balance between tricycle and tail-draggers is slightly different. Tricycle-gear airplanes have the center of gravity further forward than tail-draggers. Prop-driven tricycle airplanes also have to have room beneath the engine for the nose gear to retract. That makes the nose a little bulkier and a good bit heavier.
