The P-51 is most certainly a tail-dragger and did a three point take off and landing.

Iirc most fighter planes of the era are all tail draggers. Something to with the balance of the plane for better maneuvering. Then again I could be full if it.

Not the balance - but to get the very large propeller some "breathing" room to the ground.
