Juniper Trees

Not sure if this is good or not. I have mixed feelings about it. Looking for critique. I am starting to read up on landscape photography before the colors change. I want to make sure I am comfortable with the conversions. I lowered the highlights to make the sky a little more dramatic and to try and add a third level of separation; Subject, background, sky.

Unfortunately, there just isn't enough separation, I don't think. In the lower half of the photo, there is, but closer to the top it's just too busy and too monotone. Also it looks like as a result of your sky edits there's a pretty severe clipping line between the trees and the sky. But, it was an interesting attempt. I think if the juniper trees were darkened, that would help distinguish them a bit more. That might be the easiest fix from here to create a better sense of separation between the three layers.
