As we all know images need to be retouched and colors need to be tweaked. In the traditional darkroom dodging and burning always came in handy and always worked well. I have noticed that while trying to dodge or burn in PS2 the tones get muddy and it often ruins the image. If you use the clone tool instead on a low opacity it works just the same but does not muddy up the image. You can also play with the different blend modes. This is helpful to utilize the tool for all its worth.

i use dodge and burn (very little) on a low opacity and to me it turns out fine.

i may give your technique a try though.

I never use dodge or burn. Try adding an adjustment layer with curves make it darker (way too dark), and then add a layer mask and paint over it with various opacities. This will allow you to not only control brightness but also contrast of selected areas.

That's my trick anyway. I'm sure there's hundreds of others.

I wonder if they have some kind of learning video floating around out there some place? Maybe on YouTube? I will have to check. Does anyone else know of any?

I like the funny one, and have seen all of his. I would like to find one that focuses on technique.

There was a dodge and burn video on youtube. The best thing to do is to get multiple books on Photoshop and dive in when the mood hits you.
