Just saw this, makes me think that cameras will sooner or later be extinct with the ability to shoot film, and extract a photo that looks as good as our best DSLR cameras.

There is a 2 second NSFW clip from a culture that does not wear clothing, so keep that in mind.

How Long Until High Res Video Stills Replace Photography Altogether?

Long if ever. If you are in business of taking photos for money, think about now, but there are areas of photography, where Hi-Res video simply won't do. Beside there are already still cameras taking up to 15 frames per sec and that without specialized auxiliary equipment. In any case tripod, lights and big lens is keeping people aware, stiff and unnatural and at the same time restricting photographer movements. So for weddings is OK, wild life good to, fashion. Snapshots from vacations, family gatherings, street photography, architectural and landscape rather useless. Don't get smitten with well made propaganda clip, they are talking of very specific situations stressing importance of only what they are doing.

$12, 000 is a pretty penny too!

How Long Until High Res Video Stills Replace Photography Altogether?

I heard Trey Ratcliff talking about this (not that he's the authority on photography, although certainly a respected figure) on a video of a photowalk.

It'd be really nice to shoot 4k at, say 60 RAW per second and then pick out an image that I like. However, I can't foresee that being a genuine thing to do within at least 20-50 years (at least, at a reasonable price).

Reasons:

1.) 4k is still hard to shoot at. The only consumer-level camera that shoots 4k video is... nothing. RED cameras shoot it, but they're about $8000. I think they shoot 48 fps and shoot RAW stills.

2.) Shooting 60 fps is really hard at full resolution. My Sony A57 can shoot 12 fps at 12 MP, which isn't even full resolution. I can shoot 10 fps at full res (16MP). Standard DSLRs (not Sony SLTs) can shoot up to 6FPS (5dMKIII).

3.) Loss of resolution. Who wants to go from shooting a massive 36 down to a measly 8? Point and shoots can do 8. What would happen to printing these photos?
