That could be the father of the chicks in eclipse plumage. The males have two sets of body feathers, breeding colors and what is called eclipse because they are drab. Some male ducks resemble females during the eclipse plumage period. It varies from species to species how long they keep that drab plumage, with some going into fall and most of the winter that way. The usual is for the breeding plumage feathers to be molted after breeding, so to see a drab male with young is to be expected if the male participates in raising the brood.
