Kids shoot.......need C&C!

I had my friends kids out and about yesterday. I just ordered a canon ef 50mm f1.8 and have never used a fixed lens. I decided to take some pictures of them using my 50mm. I am not too pleased with how they came out. Can you guys give me some advice on what to do differently next time. The composition is they typical pose for a picture, nothing artsy. I was just working on using my new lens. I'd love to here some C&C so I can get better! Thanks!

they look underexposed to me. In the first one her whole face is practically in shadows. What were the settings if i may ask?

reflector or off camera flash may do your subjects justice

The pictures are underexposed and you are brightening them in post processing. If this is correct, you may need to reshoot with the correct settings; may be use the fill-in flash function.

Was it dark? Trying to figure out why you shot w such slow shutter speed and large aperture.

It was about to rain and we were in a very shaded park. When I finished the photos it started pouring.
